History
In early 2008 DHL moved its European hub from Brussels Airport to Leipzig/Halle. From then on the airport became a major cargo base.
Keep in mind
Critics say Leipzig/Halle is one of the few German airports allowed night flights for express cargo, and that companies like DHL decide what counts as express. A 2022 party statement asks for a state check. The paper says it did not verify these claims.
Night cargo here grew out of a 2006 court ruling that allowed night flights for cargo planes only. The court kept the right to revisit the matter if the noise proved too great.
Where to go further
Check this before you go: in August 2026 the airport paused its visitor tours and closed the visitor terrace after a drone incident. The article says tours will return only when the airport announces it.
