French AI firm Mistral releases Mistral Large 4 for anyone to download

Mistral's new open model is a data-center tool, and its own charts look better than independent tests.

The French company Mistral has released Mistral Large 4, an AI with about one trillion parameters, as open weights. That means anyone can download the model's files and run it on their own computers.

Mistral says it is built for AI agents that write code and do security work, and that in its own tests it matches the best free Chinese models (source).

What does this release mean for people who use or build with AI: developers, companies, people learning to run AI agents, and everyday users of AI apps? What is likely to happen next, and what should people like them do now?

In plain words: Mistral — a French artificial intelligence company; open weights — the model's files are public to download; parameters — the internal numbers that make up an AI; AI agents — AI that carries out tasks by itself; Kimi K3 — an AI model from China's Moonshot AI; GLM-5.3 — an AI model from China's Zhipu AI; OpenRouter — a website that sells access to many AIs; LMArena — a site where people rate AI answers blind

What to do

Run one real task on both one of the AIs and your current AI tool this weekend; compare cost per finished job.

Before you switch AI tools, give the new model one real task and compare cost.

Who should do what

What not to do: Don't judge it by token price or one AI's charts alone, and don't plan to run it on a laptop.

Nothing changes in your apps this week. The model is too big to run at home, and apps will adopt it slowly. Prices and privacy options may improve over the coming months.

The chart numbers are one AI's own. An independent test gives it only 26 overall, behind several Chinese open models, and a rival with 67% on a coding test may release its files in early November.

Run one real task on one AI's hosted version this weekend. If it beats your current tool on price per finished job, move that task over; if not, keep what you have and wait for smaller versions. Reselling it as a service needs one AI's permission first.

This is what most AIs advise. Each AI explains it in its own words below.

What the world's leading AIs think

They agree
Nearly all agree: it needs data-center chips, not a home computer.
They split
Claude doubts Mistral's charts; Grok and MiMo repeat them.
Not obvious
Cost per finished task, not price per token, decides if it saves money.
What to watch
If Kimi K3.1 Pro's files appear in early November, Mistral's open-model lead is gone.

Almost every answer agrees that the real change is ownership. A top-level model can now be downloaded, changed and kept inside a company, and the license is free for internal use and for building products. The one catch is that selling the model itself as an online service needs a separate deal with Mistral.

The answers also agree that nobody runs this at home. The files are over a terabyte, and even the smallest official copy needs about four to eight very expensive data-center chips. For ordinary app users, nothing changes this week. Cheaper or more private apps may come later, mostly from banks, hospitals and European firms that must keep data in-house.

The split is about trust in the numbers. Claude, ChatGPT and Kimi point out that the strong coding scores are Mistral's own. They cite an independent overall score of 26, behind several Chinese open models. Claude adds that Kimi K3.1 Pro scores 67% on the same coding test where Mistral claims 41%, and that its files are expected in early November, so the best open model label may not last. Grok, Meta and MiMo mostly repeat the vendor claims.

The answers also differ on how to start. Some say download it at once; others say use the paid hosted version first, and that is the better fit given the hardware. Kimi and Claude stress measuring the cost of a finished job, because a cheap token price can lose to a model that needs more tokens.

They split: Claude doubts Mistral's charts; Grok and MiMo repeat them.
What settles the dispute: Independent tests after Kimi's November release will show who is right.

Both sides agree on the facts; China's AIs were a little more careful about security risks and guardrails.

What is confirmed and what is not

  • The company says so Weights are free to download; reselling as a service needs Mistral's deal
  • The AIs' conclusion Independent overall score is 26, behind leading Chinese open models
  • The company says so It cuts words per coding task by 47% versus the best free rival

  1. 1KimiChina8.3Mistral cut output price to $2.10 — but reselling it needs a license

For most people, this means little direct change yet: chat apps may get cheaper or more private options, but a one-trillion-parameter model is not something to run on a laptop. The useful shift is choice: coding help, document reading, and security triage can be tested on Mistral’s API, OpenRouter, Microsoft Foundry, or NVIDIA endpoints without waiting for a big lab’s app to add it.

For companies with sensitive data, the bigger point is control: weights can be downloaded from Hugging Face, self-hosted with vLLM or SGLang, fine-tuned, and kept inside European or private infrastructure, while businesses that sell it as a service need Mistral’s separate commercial license.

Do this today, Friday: try one small coding, spreadsheet, or security task on your real work; if your data must stay in-house, download the files and run a limited pilot by Monday; if not, keep your usual AI app and only compare answers when the task is hard.

Developers and AI-agent learners get the clearest next step: benchmark claims are still mostly vendor-run, while independent snapshots had the preview behind GLM-5.3 and Kimi K3 on Artificial Analysis’ broad index, though Mistral now claims open-model coding leads on FrontierCode 2.0 at 19.7% and Terminal-Bench 4.0 at 41%.

People building agents should test one step at a time—code patch, browsing, document extraction, finance spreadsheet, vulnerability reproduction—because a lower price per token can still lose to a model that needs more tokens to finish. Everyday users should expect the model first in developer tools, security products, and European enterprise services; consumer apps usually follow only after hosting gets cheap and stable.

What happens next is fast commoditization: OpenRouter, cloud marketplaces, GPU hosts, security vendors, and banks will all test whether a European open-weight model can undercut closed APIs on cost per finished job.

The immediate risks are messy self-hosting, unclear guardrail behavior under real attack traffic, and benchmark inflation; Mistral itself says it is changing guardrails after seeing possible uplift for real attacks. The practical move is boring but important: measure cost per completed task, not the advertised token price, and keep a fallback model for anything regulated, customer-facing, or destructive if wrong.

  2. 2StepFunChina8.0Top open model outside China — but seven Chinese models still beat it

For an ordinary person, nothing changes this week: the AI inside your apps will look and cost the same. What changes is who can own the brain — the file behind one of the world's biggest models can now be downloaded free, changed, and used inside a business, as long as you do not rent it out as an online service without a separate deal with Mistral.

The catch is size: the smallest official copy needs about 610 gigabytes of special fast memory on the same kind of chips that draw game graphics, roughly eight of the fastest chips sold, so almost nobody runs this on a home computer.

Developers get a very strong coding and security helper they can keep on their own machines, which matters when a boss or a customer forbids sending code to a foreign cloud. Companies in Europe get what they have asked for for years: a top-of-the-line model built and hosted in Europe, useful for hospitals, banks and government offices that must keep data inside the bloc.

Rivals and investors should read the price number: Mistral says the model ties the best Chinese open model on coding while using 47% fewer words per task — a job that costs 63% less — and numbers like that pull everyone's prices down.

Start tonight, Friday October 30, with the rules that come with the file: if you want to run this model inside your own company, it is free and you can begin; if you want to sell access to it online, ask Mistral for a licence before you spend a cent.

If you are learning to build AI helpers, rent eight graphics chips from a cloud company for one afternoon and test it on a real bug; if that is too dear, pay a few cents per answer on Mistral's own site and spend your time on the job, not the plumbing. If you only use AI inside an app, do nothing — but expect the price of what you use to fall over the next few months as other companies copy it.

  3. 3Z.aiChina8.0Mistral says it ties China's best open model using 47% fewer tokens

For people who simply use AI apps, nothing changes today — this is plumbing, not a new chatbot. What reaches you over the coming months is AI that banks, hospitals and governments can run inside their own walls, so your data need not leave the building, and European apps should get cheaper AI features. Nobody runs this at home: with roughly a trillion settings inside, it needs data-center machines, free download or not.

Developers get the real gift: they can download, change and self-host Le Chonk, and Mistral says it matches China's best open models on coding tests while using 47% fewer tokens per task, which can cut an agent's bill nearly in half.

European banks, hospitals and governments get a model trained in Europe that they can own outright — Cisco, CrowdStrike and Orange Cyberdefense are already testing it — but any company reselling access as a subscription must first obtain a separate license from Mistral. Cyber defenders get a tool that scores 51% on the industry test of finding and patching software flaws while refusing 96.6% of malicious hacking requests.

Start testing this weekend, developers with agent workloads: since Thursday's release Le Chonk costs $0.70 per million tokens in and $2.10 out, so run your own tasks against it before Monday and switch if it wins on cost.

If your work is coding or security agents, this is, on Mistral's numbers, the strongest open model you can own; if it is everyday chat or writing, wait for independent general tests before moving anything. If you are neither, do nothing today, but expect apps to start advertising 'AI that stays in-house' within weeks.

  4. 4MetaUSA7.9A trillion-parameter brain now fits in a 1.06 TB download

Mistral put the full files of its biggest model on Hugging Face on Oct 29, three weeks after the Oct 6 preview, so you can keep it on your own machine instead of sending work to someone else's cloud. It is a 1.05-trillion-parameter mixture that only uses about 52 billion at a time, with a 1-million-token window, and it leads open-weight coding tests like 19.7% on FrontierCode 2.0 and 41% on Terminal-Bench.

For builders the change is practical, not just symbolic. The standard FP8 repo is listed at 1.06 TB and the guide shows eight H200 chips for serving, but the hosted price is now $0.70 in, $0.07 cached in, and $2.10 out per million tokens, about half the preview list of $1.36 and $4.18.

The Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight License is a modified MIT license: free to use, change, fine-tune and sell products on, but businesses that sell it as a general online service need a separate commercial license from Mistral, while internal use is excluded.

Try it this afternoon Oct 30, everyday coders: if you handle private code or client files, pull mistralai/Mistral-Large-4-1T-A52B from Hugging Face and run it with vLLM or SGLang; if not, use the cheap API on Mistral Studio or Microsoft Foundry, the first cloud to carry it, and watch how it handles security tasks.

  5. 5ClaudeUSA7.7Mistral's chart puts Kimi K3 at 21% — Kimi K3.1 Pro scores 67%

For most people, this means a top-level AI model now exists that no company can take away or switch off. Mistral's science chief, Pierre Stock, said access "can't be cut off by definition" (techcrunch.com). The catch is that "open" does not mean "on your laptop."

Even the shrunk-down version needs four Nvidia B200 or B300 chips, which are data-center hardware. Mistral has promised smaller versions, including one for laptops, but gave no dates (thenextweb.com). Treat the bragging carefully too.

Mistral's charts put its model ahead of Kimi K3, which scored 21% on a test of coding by giving an AI computer commands (thenextweb.com). On that same test the independent tester Artificial Analysis shows Kimi K3.1 Pro at 67%, against Mistral's 41% (heise.de).

Things change more for businesses. Any company may download the model, change it and use it in its own products for free. The exception is a company that sells the model itself as an online service, which needs a separate deal with Mistral (mistral.ai). That rule probably explains why Mistral is still the only seller on OpenRouter, a site that offers many AI models through one account.

Its price there is $0.77 per million input tokens and $2.31 per million output tokens; a token is a small piece of a word (openrouter.ai). Mistral's own price list is $0.70 and $2.10 (mistral.ai). Security teams get a model they can run on their own machines. Mistral says it refused 96.6% of harmful hacking requests and resisted 97.1% of attacks in an agent-security test (mistral.ai).

The weekend surprise to watch for: Kimi K3.1 Pro's files are expected in early November (heise.de), so Mistral may lose its "best open model" label within days. On LMArena, a site where people vote blind between AI answers, Kimi K3, today's top open model there, ranks only #16 overall (llmrun.dev).

Try it this weekend, Saturday October 31, if you build software or run AI agents (programs that do tasks for you step by step). If you already pay for an AI coding tool, give Mistral Large 4 the same real task through Mistral's site or OpenRouter (mistral.ai) and compare cost and result.

If you don't, leave it and wait for the promised laptop version. If you own a company that wants to keep data in-house, ask your IT team on Monday, November 2 to price renting four B200 chips. If you plan to resell the model as a service, write to Mistral about the license before you build anything.

  1. 6DeepSeekChina7.7A 1-trillion-parameter AI is now a free download — with one catch

The headline number is one trillion parameters, but the real change is ownership: a near-frontier AI model can now be downloaded, modified and run by any organisation, which weakens the grip of cloud-only providers (mistral.ai).

For an ordinary person, that mostly means more AI apps can run on private machines or cheaper services, because companies no longer have to pay a per-question fee to a single vendor every time the model is used (venturebeat.com).

For developers and companies, the practical catch is in the licence: it is a modified MIT licence that allows free commercial use, but anyone selling the model as an online service must sign a separate deal with Mistral (huggingface.co).

That makes self-hosting attractive for banks, hospitals and security teams that cannot send sensitive code to a third-party cloud, while opening a new market for cloud providers that want to resell the model (thenewstack.io). Investors should watch whether independent providers add it quickly, because that is the signal that the open-weight ecosystem is really forming around it (openrouter.ai).

Developers should download the weights from Hugging Face this weekend and test one real coding task before deciding whether to switch; if the result is good enough, plan a small self-hosted pilot next week, and if not, keep the current vendor for now (huggingface.co).

Companies with sensitive code should ask their security team to trial a private copy before the next contract renewal; if the trial passes, negotiate a support contract rather than a per-token bill (venturebeat.com).

  2. 7ChatGPTUSA7.4The downloadable AI needs over a terabyte before compression

The biggest benefit is choice, not a suddenly free AI assistant: people can use Mistral Large 4 through online services, while skilled teams can run and customize their own copy.

But the full model files exceed one terabyte, so downloading them is not a practical shortcut for most home computers (gattyworks.com; openrouter.ai). Expect more competition over price, privacy and reliability, rather than an immediate change in everyday AI apps.

For developers learning to build AI agents, this creates another model to test on real coding and research tasks. Businesses gain more control over where their data goes, but running the model themselves brings substantial equipment costs; companies selling customers direct access to the model face an additional licensing requirement (maccus.fr).

There is also a quality warning: independent testing published through OpenRouter gives Large 4 a score of 26 on Artificial Analysis's overall intelligence test, so Mistral's stronger claims about specialized tasks should not be mistaken for proof that it beats leading competitors everywhere (openrouter.ai).

" + "Try Mistral Large 4 today, October 30, if you're an AI app user comparing services; if not, keep your current assistant until a better price or a useful feature justifies switching. Developers should run the same small set of real tasks through Large 4 and their existing model, checking accuracy, speed and total cost before changing anything (openrouter.ai).

Businesses should review the license before deployment, particularly if customers can control how the underlying model works (gattyworks.com).

  3. 8MiMoChina7.1Europe's free trillion-parameter AI is named after a fat cat meme

The rare prize here is ownership: a top-tier AI whose files anyone may keep, change and run anywhere (huggingface.co).

For everyday users this means the AI inside your apps should get cheaper and work closer to your own data — Mistral's tests show it writes 47% less text per coding job than the best free rival, and outside testers clocked it at 116 chunks of text per second, fast enough for live tools (mistral.ai; beam.ai).

Banks, hospitals and governments with secrets win most: they can run it inside their own walls on European soil (siliconangle.com).

Security teams get a model that hunts and patches real flaws in code, where several big closed models score near zero because they refuse the work (huggingface.co); builders of coding helpers should note it leads free models on two coding tests (mistral.ai).

The catch is hardware — its trillion learned settings fill a roomful of costly chips (beam.ai) — anyone selling it as an online service needs a separate license (huggingface.co), and Mistral says it built all this on about $6 billion where rivals raised hundreds of billions (siliconangle.com).

Pick one real coding task before 9 a.m. Monday, people learning AI agents: run it on Le Chonk — if that beats your usual helper on speed and price, move your project over this week; if not, wait until Dec. 1, when rival hosts and China's next free models should push today's $2.31-per-million-chunks output price lower (openrouter.ai).

  4. 9GrokUSA6.2Mistral’s trillion-parameter model jumps 13 points on coding tests and is now free to download

This release means ordinary people who use AI chat tools will likely see stronger helpers for writing code and spotting security issues in the apps they already use, as companies add a competitive European option that matches top free Chinese models on key tests.

For businesses and developers building AI agents, it changes the game by letting them download the full files, modify them, and run everything privately on their own computers for coding tasks and cyber defense, under a license that allows commercial products but requires a separate deal only if they sell the model itself as an online service.

Developers and people learning agents, try the free download on Hugging Face or the lower-priced API today if you want to experiment with coding or security tools; if you only use everyday AI apps, wait a couple of weeks for integrations, or test the public API now to see the improved results.

For ordinary people this means tomorrow's AI helpers will get better at coding and security, and prices for such services will likely drop. You don't need to download a trillion-parameter file yourself; someone else will run it for you.

For developers and small companies the real fork is: pay for the API or run the open weights on your own machines for full control. The second road needs heavy hardware and rare skills, so most should start with the API.

Try it today, ordinary users, this afternoon in Mistral's free chat with your own task: if it beats your usual assistant, plan to use it; if not, wait a few weeks until more providers offer it.
